Morning vs Night Skincare: What Goes When
Share
Your skin has different needs at 7 AM versus 10 PM. During the day, it is defending against UV, pollution, and oxidative stress. At night, it shifts into repair mode — cell turnover speeds up and your barrier works to restore itself. Your routine should reflect that.
The Morning Routine: Protect
Morning is about defense. Keep it light and focused on shielding your skin from environmental damage.
- Cleanser: A gentle rinse. If you did your routine the night before, your skin is not dirty — just a light wash to remove overnight oil and product residue.
- Hydrating serum: Vitamin C is the classic morning active. It neutralizes free radicals generated by UV exposure and brightens skin tone over time.
- Moisturizer: Lightweight in the morning, heavier overnight. Something that hydrates without leaving a heavy film, especially if you wear sunscreen on top.
- SPF: Non-negotiable. Broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher. This is the single most impactful step in any skincare routine.
The Night Routine: Repair
Night is when you can bring in the heavier hitters. Your skin is not fighting the sun, so active ingredients can work without competing against environmental stressors.
- Cleanser: More thorough than morning. Double cleanse if you wore sunscreen or makeup — an oil-based cleanser first, then your regular one.
- Treatment serum: This is where niacinamide, retinol, or exfoliating acids belong. These ingredients increase cell turnover and can make skin temporarily more sensitive to light, which is why nighttime application makes sense.
- Heavier moisturizer or night cream: Your skin loses more water overnight than during the day. A richer cream helps prevent transepidermal water loss while you sleep.
Common Mistakes
Using retinol in the morning is the biggest one. It degrades in sunlight and increases photosensitivity. Save it for PM. Another frequent error — skipping moisturizer at night because your skin feels oily. That oiliness is often your skin overcompensating for dehydration.
The order stays the same regardless of time: cleanser, treatment, moisturizer. Morning adds SPF at the end. Night swaps SPF for a thicker cream. Simple framework, big difference in results.
