Niacinamide: The One Ingredient Your Skin Actually Needs

If you could only use one active ingredient for the rest of your life, niacinamide would be a strong candidate. It is not glamorous. It does not have a cult following like retinol or vitamin C. But it quietly fixes almost everything.

What Is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3. Your body uses it for energy production, DNA repair, and maintaining the skin barrier. When applied topically, it does a handful of things remarkably well:

  • Reduces the appearance of enlarged pores
  • Evens out skin tone and fades dark spots
  • Strengthens the moisture barrier
  • Regulates oil production without drying you out
  • Calms redness and inflammation

That is a lot for one ingredient. Most actives are good at one thing. Niacinamide covers five or six.

Why It Works for Every Skin Type

Oily skin? Niacinamide regulates sebum. Dry skin? It strengthens your barrier so moisture stays locked in. Sensitive and reactive? It is one of the gentlest actives available — irritation is extremely rare even at higher concentrations.

This is partly why we included a related microbiome active in our jelly serum. (We've also written about why we chose bioactive prebiotics over standalone niacinamide for v1.) It works across the board without needing a different version for different people.

How to Use It

Niacinamide plays well with almost everything. Layer it under moisturizer, pair it with hyaluronic acid, use it alongside retinol. The only combination some people find irritating is niacinamide plus vitamin C at high concentrations — though recent research suggests this concern is somewhat overblown.

Use it twice daily. Morning and night. A concentration between 2% and 10% is the sweet spot. Higher is not always better — 5% delivers strong results without pushing past what your skin can absorb in one application.

The Unsexy Truth

Niacinamide will not transform your face overnight. It works gradually. After a few weeks, you will notice smoother texture. After a couple months, more even tone. It is the kind of ingredient that makes you look back at photos and think — huh, my skin actually looks good now. No drama. Just results.
